A great part in rough shape
For my S4 build I tracked down a used RS4 steering wheel. The shape was right and it was the upgrade I wanted, but it showed up shiny with years of dirt and grime worked into the leather. It was the kind of surface you would not really want to put your hands on.
A lot of people would have written it off or wrapped it. Leather like this does not need to be replaced. It needs to be cleaned and conditioned correctly.
How we brought the leather back
We worked the wheel with two products we trust for this kind of job:
• Leather Master Strong Cleaner to lift the embedded grime
• Leather Master Protection Cream to condition and protect the leather afterward
The first pass alone pulled an alarming amount of dirt off the surface. That is the moment that tells you the leather underneath is actually fine, it was just buried. Once it was clean we conditioned it so it would stay supple and protected rather than drying out and cracking down the road.
The finished wheel looks like a different part. We also swapped the worn center badge for a correct fresh S4 badge to tie it together.
The rest of the interior
A clean wheel in a tired interior does not work, so the rest of the cabin got the same attention.
The RS4 door pulls went in to replace the worn originals, and the center shifter surround, a piece that wears down on every B5, was replaced with a fresh one. The previous owner had coated the old one in plastidip, which was never going to be my thing.
For seats I went with Recaro Sportster CS, redone in custom Alcantara since the original color options were no longer available. The faded factory trim pieces, the A pillars, C pillars, and rear deck, were redone in black Alcantara as well, and the interior trim was finished off in carbon fiber.
Why restore instead of replace
New old stock interior parts for a car this age are hard to find and expensive when you do. More importantly, original leather and trim that is simply dirty or tired is almost always worth saving. Cleaning and conditioning a real leather part correctly gets you a better result than most replacements, and it keeps the car honest.
That RS4 wheel is the perfect example. It went from something I did not want to touch to one of my favorite parts of the car, with cleaner and conditioner and a little patience.
